to call the northern indiana commuter transportation district police. police are looking for more suspects after breaking up a dog fighting operation in the south suburbs. wgn's nancy loo has the latest from dolton. >> this operation was apparently pretty sophisticated. according to the cook county sheriff they have an uptick in dogfighting cases and the bust here last night was evidence of that. a sign on the door of this apparently abandoned industrial building warrants to be aware of dog. a tip to police made them aware of the situation involving many dogs. the officers arrived just of the 7:00 last night to find an active dog fight operation complete with a makeshift ring and up to 10 pitbull. there was also signs of improper care and abuse. the people inside scattered running through the woods near the building on the 1500 block of 142nd. some even ran across the bishop for to get away. inside the police and county sheriff's office were able to arrest eight people including six who were hiding in the rafters. it is not clear how many dog bites were held here but the surrounding area i

hard last night, northern indiana and much of the state of ohio right now is seeing snow. careful driving, interstate 70 going across the lower portions of the great lakes and the ohio valley. and the winds are gusting, too. we probably have a little bit of blowing and drifting snow in indiana, michigan and ohio. and again, those winds this morning around new york city could get as high as 60 miles per hour. the worst of it coming in the next three hours. so keep that in mind as you're driving on the roads or doing anything outdoors. as far as snowfall goes, over the next 24 to 48 hours, we're going to get lake-effect bands. we're also going to see snow on the backside of this big storm. western new york will get a good coating of snow between three to six inches in most locations. so the forecast over the next three days, today's the worst travel day by far, great lakes and the northeast. thankfully as we go through the weekend, it's a little chilly across the country, but the weather improves for all your travel needs. the exception being the west coast. once again, for about th

axelrod. rnristmas is turning treacherous for large sections of the country. tonight, parts of indiana and kentucky are under a blizzard watch. roads in oklahoma and northern arkansas could soon become impassable due to whiteouts, and another storm system developing along the gulf of mexico from daxas to florida is raising the threat of tornadoes. the director of the emergency management agency in alabama says the danger is made worse now because so many drivers are holiday travelers driving in unfamiliar places. michelle miller brings us up to speed. >> reporter: a half-foot of snow caused whiteouts on roads across the texas panhandle. there were near-blizzard conditions at day break in amarillo. 250 miles east, just outside oklahoma city, a 21-vehicle pile-up on interstate 40 stopped traffic for five hours. 12 people were injured. one state over in missouri, salt trucks were busy preparing the roads for expected heavy snowfall. transportation officials mark sheldon warned holiday travelers. >> certainly, those roads are slick. if you don't have to get out, please don't get out. >> re
, and on the northern side of the snow system blizzard conditions ongoing across the state of indiana and also northern parts of the state of ohio. cleveland really getting in on some of that heavy snow right now, and accumulations could be anywhere between 6-12 inches of snow, higher amounts possible especially as we head into interior portions of the northeast. as we head into this evening, the nighttime hours and early thursday morning, so we do have a prolonged period of time here that we will be dealing with the winter weather. winter storm warnings are in effect from parts of west virginia and also western portions of the state of west virginia, in pennsylvania, upstate new york and also portions of maine. so easily over a foot of snow forecast, especially on some of the higher elevations across the northeast. and here's one of our computer models as far as snow. as far as additional snow in parts of ohio, easily over 6 inches out here, and some of that purple shading is actually over two feet of snow, and that's basically to the east of the city of buffalo. so, again, incredible amounts of snowf
across areas in chicago, northern parts of the state of indiana that into michigan. on the southern end of the storm system we have showers and thunderstorms in louisiana, mississippi and tennessee. eventually both of these areas will be coming together and moving towards the northeast. i do quickly want to point out between these areas we're actually seeing freezing rain falling early this morning across places in arkansas and northern texas. please drive carefully out there. that is outside the city of memphis as well. western portions of state of tennessee dealing with possible icing on the roadways. otherwise a number of winter weather advisories issued for the state of new jersey, pennsylvania and across the mid-atlantic where we're expecting to see some accumulation of snowfall. interior sections of the northeast, you're not expecting too much snow. the storm will be quick mover. many areas will see the snow including new york city and places in upstate new york and pennsylvania of the by sunday the storm is gone leaving behind some windy conditions. here is a look at the computer

new mexico, north texas, panhandle of oklahoma across kansas, missouri, southern indiana and illinois this is where light snow is heading your way. winter weather advisory means slippery travel but not a blockbuster event and cancel your events. travel with care especially northern, the panhandle of oklahoma, up through kansas this morning the snow is breaking out shown here in white. we'll be watching missouri. traveling interstate 70 during the morning hours. that's where you'll deal with snowy weather and this will continue through much of the day. we just changed over to snow in joplin. interstate 44 right now mostly rain but we'll watch interstate 70 later today. that's a troublesome drive and a major thoroughfare. one to three inches from indianapolis to st. louis to kansas city to wichita including areas around topeka, kansas. other areas of the country won't see much snow. very cold. northern new england very cold. boston is at 22. maine is in the single digits with negative numbers in the northern plains. very cold out there today. minneapolis, fargo, duluth, and that cold a

to 12 inches in the pink swath in indiana, and indianapolis and some of this snow coming late tonight, a little bit in northern pennsylvania and winds up, there's the total storm forecast of 6 to 12 inches. a huge part of interior and northern new england and certainly back in to the add n adirondacks. the thing to really know about is the potential for tornadoes. and it, of course, begins tonight with an isolated threat but working in to tomorrow, christmas day, most people aren't thinking about the weather but make sure you have a way to get the warnings here. everywhere in red, a chance of severe storms. the real potential is gusty winds and the stronging thunderstorms and tornadoes and a few area with southeast texas and louisiana, 5 out of 10 and a 50% chance of a tornado in 50 miles here and central and southern mississippi and alabama, 6 out of 10. a lot of things to watch here. folks along the gulf coast, want you to be attentive to severe weather. >> todd santos, thank you, sir. >>> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in the schools to protect the ch
. look at this. more than 400 flights canceled today already. joining me live from fishers, indiana, weather channel's dave malcolf. where's the storm headed now? how bad is it? >> reporter: richard, imagine a line between southern illinois, up through here, through central and northern ohio, all the way up to western p.a. that's the 800-mile stretch we're talking about this for this winter storm and how bad is it? let's measure it in flights canceled. we're talking hundreds of flighflight s canceled for just this airport alone and then the entire airport not having almost any flights because they're all either canceled or delayed for indianapolis. we're also seeing the same cancelations in chicago, columbus, cleveland, and those airports down to dallas. seeing lots of airports closed down. the roadways are kind of slowed down right now because of visibility. a few hours ago, it was really, really hard to see because when this wind gets blowing and we are talking about 20-mile-a-hour wind gusts, it is blowing around and just see the white going down the street. that affects commerce

, otherwise on the northern side of the storm guess where we're getting more snow, ohio, indiana, places have been hit by snow storms in the past -- basically two storms already in the past couple of days, which is more snow for you guys. as we head into portions of louisiana, further on into their time zone as we head into mid tight dealing with an area of rainfall. current temperatures right now. 32 in new york city. pourings of the midwest cold as well. in the teens. minneapolis and also rapid city. as far as the wind again very tkheul lee out here, 32 in new york city is what it feels like, 17 boston, and in portions of upstate new york it feels like the low 20s. new york city the exact forecast coming in as we head into midnight tonight is we do think the temperature will be reading at about 30 degrees or so. it could feel a little cooler than that. anyone headed out to time square you've got to bundle up, and jon as we head into new yore's day to kickoff 2013 we could see a couple of snow showers but no big deal and the high temperature should be a nice toasty 35 degrees. jon: 35. okay.

the storm. the worse of it winding down in indiana. basically on the warm side of the system we have showers and thunderstorms. areas of heavy rain across northern florldz and eastern carolinas that should be moving out very shortly. you will be drying out. head northbound temperatures are cold enough. ohio have you been dealing with that snowfall throughout the entire overnight hours. pennsylvania and upstate, new york already seeing that snowfall moving on in. as far as how much snowfall goes for the northeast we have been seeing models spitting out a lot of snow or no snow and going back and forth. most snowfall accumulations 3 feet of snow. nothing too significant. 3 to 5 inches of snow first alert forecast across ohio, parts of indiana. that should be winding down throughout the day today. as the we head into the northeast. new york city you are looking at very light accumulations. maybe 1 to 3 inches of snow. as we head a little bit further off to the west in the suburbs you could be looking at 4 to 6 inches of snow and also across pennsylvania and 3 to 6 inches of snowfall. a number o
